Definition
A certificate that proves a set amount of electricity (usually one megawatt-hour) came from a specific source, such as a wind or solar farm. Once a company uses a certificate to claim that electricity, the certificate is “retired” and no one else can claim it. Companies buy EACs to show that the electricity they use is renewable, which lowers their market-based Scope 2 emissions. EACs can be bought together with electricity or on their own. Countries use different names for them, such as RECs in North America and Guarantees of Origin in Europe.
In Practice
“My company can’t install solar panels at our office, so we buy energy attribute certificates to match the electricity we use with renewable power.”
