Definition
A way of calculating Scope 2 emissions that reflects the electricity a company chooses to buy. Renewable electricity bought through energy attribute certificates, a green tariff or a power purchase agreement lowers emissions under this method. Any electricity not covered is calculated using the grid’s average emissions, minus the renewable power others have already claimed (known as the residual mix). Companies following the GHG Protocol report Scope 2 emissions with both this method and the location-based method.
In Practice
“My company switched to a green electricity plan this year, so our market-based Scope 2 emissions went down.”
